Nicole and Steven's Copper Ridge on the Neuse wedding was the kind of day that reminds you why you love photographing celebrations. Classic elegance meets laid-back Southern charm—exactly what you'd expect from a couple who describes themselves as "go with the flow" but also meticulously planned every elegant detail.
When Nicole first reached out about their May wedding, she mentioned feeling shy in front of the camera. Steven, on the other hand? The guy who'll talk to anyone at the grocery store for twenty minutes. But here's what I love about photographing couples like them—the camera-shy partner always relaxes once they see their outgoing partner having fun, and the genuine connection between them takes over.
Getting Ready at Copper Ridge on the Neuse
Nicole got ready in Copper Ridge's bridal suite with her four bridesmaids, while Courtney K Beauty LLC worked their magic on hair and makeup. The morning light filtering through the venue's windows was perfect for capturing all those detail shots—the sage greenery against navy accents, her bouquet from Wildflower Florist, all the little pieces that make a wedding day feel complete.
Steven and his groomsmen were getting ready separately (that first look anticipation is real), and when Nicole's dad saw her in her dress for the first time, I made sure to capture that moment. Those parent first looks hit different.
About Copper Ridge on the Neuse
If you're not familiar with Copper Ridge on the Neuse, it's a waterfront wedding venue located in New Bern, North Carolina, right on the Neuse River. The venue offers both indoor and outdoor ceremony spaces (crucial for unpredictable Carolina weather), with reception areas that can handle everything from intimate elopements to full celebrations.
For Nicole and Steven's late-afternoon ceremony, we were blessed with perfect weather. The outdoor ceremony overlooking the water at 4:30pm gave us that golden light starting to soften, and the classic elegance of their vision came together beautifully against the natural backdrop.
The Ceremony & Cocktail Hour
The 20-minute ceremony was intimate and personal—no unnecessary frills, just two people genuinely excited to marry each other. After they walked back down the aisle, they stopped for that celebratory kiss while everyone cheered (always makes for an incredible shot), and we moved straight into cocktail hour.
This is when I stole Nicole and Steven away for couple portraits. Contrary to what it sounds like, this time is usually pretty relaxing for couples after the ceremony buzz. Nicole had requested "all of the above" when I asked about portrait style—kissing, romantic, playful, silly, natural—which is exactly my approach anyway. Let couples be themselves, give gentle direction, and capture whatever unfolds.
The Neuse River provided stunning backdrops, and even though Nicole was initially nervous about photos, she settled in quickly once we started moving and laughing.
Reception Details
BTA Entertainment kept the reception energy going from 6-10pm, while Strange & Sons Catering made sure everyone was well-fed. The cake from Famous Bakery was gorgeous (and I made sure to photograph it before anyone cut into it—priorities).
One detail I loved: a large portion of Nicole's family is hard of hearing, so clear communication and visual cues were essential throughout the day. It's these family dynamics that make every wedding unique and remind you that great photography isn't just about pretty pictures—it's about understanding the people you're photographing.
The Sparkler Send-Off
We ended the night with a sparkler send-off, which gave us those dramatic, romantic shots that look incredible but also capture genuine joy. Nicole and Steven walking through that tunnel of light, laughing and holding onto each other—that's the good stuff.
