There's something beautifully intentional about couples who choose to keep their wedding celebration small and intimate. Emmy and Justin's October wedding at Whiskey Kitchen in downtown Raleigh was exactly that—a thoughtfully curated day focused on what mattered most: their commitment to each other and quality time with their closest family and friends.

Keeping It Simple, Keeping It Meaningful
From our very first conversation, Emmy and Justin knew what they wanted: an intimate celebration without the traditional bridal party structure. Each had one brother standing beside them as their best man, and that was perfect. This choice gave us the gift of time—time to capture genuine moments, time for unhurried portraits, and time for them to actually enjoy their cocktail hour instead of rushing through endless group photos.
A Downtown Raleigh Love Story
The day began at two locations just a short walk apart in downtown Raleigh. While Emmy got ready at Whiskey Kitchen with her mom, future mother-in-law, and close girlfriends, Justin prepared for the day at the Marriott City Center. This setup allowed us to capture both of their getting-ready experiences—those quiet, anticipatory moments before everything changes.
Emmy wanted the full experience documented: her dress hanging beautifully, the invitation details, all those small touches that tell the complete story of a wedding day. We started with detail shots at 1:30pm, giving us plenty of time to work without feeling rushed.
The First Look That Started It All
At 3:50pm, Justin walked from the Marriott to Whiskey Kitchen for their first look. We found a beautiful spot nearby (after securing the necessary permit for Nash Square Park), and the moment was everything a first look should be—private, emotional, and completely theirs.
What followed was pure magic: an unhurried portrait session where we could focus entirely on the two of them. Without the time constraints of a large bridal party, we captured couple portraits that felt natural and authentic. This is what I love about intimate weddings—the breathing room to create images that truly reflect who you are as a couple.
Family Matters
By 4:15pm, their immediate family joined us for portraits. With relatively small families on both sides—just siblings, parents, and grandparents—we moved through these groupings smoothly and intentionally. Everyone felt included and celebrated, which aligns perfectly with my extended care philosophy: every person at your wedding matters, and everyone deserves to feel seen.
The Ceremony & Celebration
At 5:30pm, as the early autumn light started to soften, Emmy and Justin exchanged vows in front of their closest people. The ceremony was personal and intimate, exactly what they'd envisioned.
Cocktail hour brought a smart timeline decision: we used the first 15 minutes for extended family photos, then Emmy and Justin were free to actually enjoy cocktail hour with their guests. Too often, couples miss this part of their own celebration. Not these two.

Reception Magic
The reception at Whiskey Kitchen flowed seamlessly. Without the need to photograph endless bridal party traditions, we could focus on what was actually happening: toasts that made everyone laugh and cry, dances that meant something, and all those in-between moments that make a wedding day memorable.
At 10:20pm, we wrapped their celebration with a sparkler send-off—the perfect punctuation to an intimate, intentional day.
What Made This Wedding Work
Emmy and Justin's wedding reinforces something I've learned over years of photographing couples: bigger isn't always better. By keeping their celebration intimate, they created space for:
- Genuine connection with every single guest
- Unhurried portraits that feel natural, not posed
- Quality over quantity in every decision
- Actually enjoying their own celebration
They also made smart choices about their timeline and coverage. Adding extra photography hours meant we could capture both getting ready locations and stay through the sparkler exit. This comprehensive coverage tells their complete story, from the quiet moments of preparation to the joy-filled send-off.
For Couples Planning Intimate Celebrations
If you're considering a smaller wedding, Emmy and Justin's day offers a beautiful blueprint:
- Choose your priorities clearly. They knew they wanted great photos and video more than a large bridal party, and they planned accordingly.
- Build in buffer time. The relaxed timeline meant nothing felt rushed.
- Trust your vendors. Working with their event manager Jillian from Jillian Rose Events ensured every detail was coordinated seamlessly.
- Don't apologize for keeping it small. Intimate doesn't mean less special—it means more intentional.
